On Friendship and Girlfriends…

Those of you that know me best know that second only to my family, I value my relationship with my close friends the most. I’m lucky to have a core group of friends that have come to mean so much to me. They’ve been there with me to celebrate the most victorious moments of my life and they’ve been there to hold me up when I’ve been at my lowest moments. They keep me grounded. They renew my spirit. They keep me sane.

We’ve become so close that over 5 years ago, in October of 2006, we started a bookclub just so we’d be sure that we saw each other at least every month. And we do. A few have had had to drop out over the years, some are able to come back, some aren’t. But we all know that we share not only a love of reading and love of each other, but a friendship that has withstood through good times, bad times, children being born, children going through phases, illnesses, family insanity, etc etc. No matter what, my girlfriends are there for me. And that… that, my friends, is the true definition of friendship.

I’ve learned much from my group of friends. I’ve learned that if get enough of us together someone,¬†inexplicably, will end up screaming “It’s a penis!”. I’ve learned that I am, sadly, not a perfect parent and that I’m not alone. I’ve learned that the Mother of the Year trophy really does get passed along and circles right back to you. I’ve learned that if one of them says “duck” you do it and ask why later. I’ve learned that I’m pretty good Mother and Wife and Friend. I’ve learned that being my true self is really who people want to see. I’ve learned that ¬†true friends might pass you by but always come back to cross the finish line with you. I’ve learned that… I’ve learned that my life is so much richer with them there.

So, this holiday season, I just want my friends to know… I love you guys. Thank you for being there. We may not talk about the book every month, but I always leave feeling like I’ve been embraced in the world’s biggest hug.

(And a special shout out to the two who aren’t in the photo below — and to our significant others who once or twice per year allow the hen party to go pecking around their house, and deal with the kids while the approximately twelve cackling coven members laugh loud enough to cause the neighbors to come knockin’) XOXO

Ahhh… Austin.

Fall 2010

See that photo? It was taken a few days ago… today’s high is supposed to be 55 and a low of 27.

Welcome to Austin!

I guess I’d better turn on the heater now, we’ve had the A/C going since March!

Bertram Oatmeal Festival 2009

2009 Bertram Oatmeal Festival 5My good friend, Julie, lives out in “BFE” – and they have a yearly Oatmeal Festival there in early September (yes, I realize I’m behind on photo sharing and blogging. What else is new). I love small town festivals. I know that makes me weird, especially because I don’t like living in small towns (although I do believe that Austin is the biggest small town in the US, everyone seems to know everyone else around here or at least someone that knows someone you know). ANYWAY… my other good friend, Ellen, and I took pity on our husbands and drug ourselves out there and let the husbands have a play date.

It was SO much fun. We made it just in time for the pet parade (which is what the kids were looking forward to the most), where our friends were showing off their prize winning chicken (it had the most spots). Then the real parade and then we went over for lunch and carnival activities. That part was a little small and underwhelming, but it was still a lot of fun (and the kids didn’t notice, I just hate carnival games) ;)

The best part according to Jamie was being with his friends and Cassie said it was getting rained on by oatmeal (a little crop plane flies around and dumps oatmeal on you. Heh)

I definitely think we’ll be going back next year! Here’s some photos to share – you can always see more by visiting my flickr (badge on the right). The lighting was great out there that morning… I, on the other hand, am an idiot and forgot to charge the camera so we ran out of juice just before Mr. Oatmeal came! Darn it!

Dinner Party…

For those of you that follow Jenny’s blog, you know she had a dinner party tonight. We were one of the lucky people to be invited and we had a fabulous time. Jamie and Cassie won’t shut up about dessert. She took cake, tore it up, shaped it into mushrooms and stood them up in green jello. Kids totally dug it (and it was good too!).

One of the people there was a lady named Laura who does photography. She does Upon My Lens. I need to start doing her challenges because lately I’m just not taking pictures. Or I’ll take them, hate them all and delete them without putting them up. I dunno what my deal is lately.

The other gentleman there was named Curtis and he was one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. We had a great time. Thank you, Jenny!

Jamie had a special message for you though…

Girl’s Rock Band at M’s Party…

Earlier this year, my dear friend Crystal had THE birthday EVENT of the year for her oldest daughter. It was a rock band party. And we had a photo shoot. Oh yes. The girl band attitude was in full effect, people! Photos below…

I must also say that us adult girls had a great time too. She sent the husband and son out of the house for the night. We got the kids settled and we had a few drinks :) I ended up crashing on the sofa and we threw food at them in the morning until their moms came and got them. It was great fun, as you’ll see below…

Cassie LOVED this guitar. She had a great time playing with it.

Ah, here they are… Courtney, Alanis and Pink…
